Every child deserves success right from the start. We know that the sooner children learn to read, the greater their success at school. This is why we put reading at the heart of what we do.
At Our Lady and St Paul’s we use Read Write Inc Phonics to develop children’s early reading and writing skills. The systematic nature of our phonics lessons ensures that learners develop a secure foundation in their literacy skills. Each lesson is designed to include direct instruction, guided practice, and independent application, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of phonemic awareness and decoding skills. Children access phonics lessons daily from day one through our team of expert reading teachers building their knowledge from sounds to words and on to become fluent readers who read with understanding and expression.
The importance of phonics cannot be overstated, it equips children with the necessary tools to become fluent readers and confident writers. By systematically teaching the relationship between sounds and letters, phonics lays the groundwork for lifelong literacy.
In line with our commitment to inclusivity, we offer specialised phonics support for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). One-to-one tutoring is provided where needed to ensure that every child has the opportunity to catch up and keep up with their peers.
Furthermore, our phonics programme continues into Key Stage 2 for those who require additional support. Using Fresh Start Phonics, we ensure that children who struggle to attain expected literacy standards receive targeted interventions, fostering their confidence and love for reading. We aim to provide all children with the skills necessary to thrive academically and beyond
Our Phonics Subject Leader is Amy McGlade.
