Intent

At Our Lady and St Paul, our computing curriculum follows the Kapow Primary scheme, designed to inspire resilient, creative, and digitally literate learners who use technology to serve and change the world for the better.

We aim to:

· Deliver a balanced, cyclical curriculum covering Kapow’s five key strands: Computing systems and networks, Programming, Creating media, Data and information, and Skills showcases.

· Embed Catholic social teaching and moral responsibility, framing digital citizenship around Gospel values of respect, truth, and human dignity.

· Promote computational thinking, logic, and independent inquiry, giving pupils the vocabulary and tools to articulate their learning.

· Equip all pupils—including vulnerable and SEND learners—with the skills needed to participate actively and ethically in a modern digital society.

Implementation

Our computing curriculum at Our Lady and St Paul is delivered through Kapow’s structured, spiral approach where skills and knowledge are revisited and deepened year-on-year:

· Systematic Sequence: We utilise Kapow’s progressive lesson plans from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring clear scaffolding and comprehensive National Curriculum coverage.

· Discreet and Practical Learning: Computing is taught through practical, engaging projects that encourage hands-on tinkering, debugging, and cross-curricular problem-solving.

· Woven Online Safety: E-safety is deeply integrated into every unit via Kapow’s digital citizenship elements, ensuring online safety is a constant conversation rather than a standalone event.

· Catholic Values in Action: Online safety and digital communication lessons are explicitly linked to Gospel principles, teaching pupils to use technology respectfully, safely, and with Christian kindness.

· Staff Empowerment: We use Kapow’s continuous professional development (CPD) videos to ensure all teachers possess the strong subject knowledge required to deliver high-quality, confident lessons.

· Devices: we use Lenovo 2-1 Gen 3 which allow pupils to use laptop or tablet modes, enabling more digital freedom to create and learn. We also have use of iPads to support learning.

 

Impact

The impact of our Kapow-led curriculum at Our Lady and St Paul is monitored through a combination of pupil voice, digital portfolios, and Kapow’s specific assessment frameworks:

· Competent Creators: Pupils should leave our school as confident coders, data-handlers, and digital content creators who can complete multi-layered ‘Skills Showcase’ projects independently.

· Ethical Digital Citizens: Children demonstrate a mature understanding of online risks, understand the moral implications of their digital footprint, and act with online respect rooted in Christian values.

· Resilient Problem Solvers: Pupils embrace mistakes as part of the learning journey, displaying high resilience when debugging code or troubleshooting systems.

· Readiness for the Future: Pupils transition to secondary education equipped with the exact technical capability, digital vocabulary, and moral compass required in an ever-evolving world.
