Meet the team
Our EYFS team is led by Mrs Wright. Miss Davies is our Nursery lead and is also the school SENCo. We also have specialist, experienced support staff to complete our team – Mrs Keane, Mrs Kucharska and Miss Jones.
Our Learning
In Foundation Stage we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, learning through play. We have lots of lovely resources in our classroom and outdoor area so we are always busy playing and learning together.
Each term we guide and progress the children in all 7 inter-connected areas of learning and development within the EYFS Framework.
These 7 areas are:
Communication and Language (Listening, Attention and Understanding, Speaking)
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (Self-Regulation, Managing Self and Building Relationships)
Physical Development (Gross Motor Skills and Fine Motor Skills)
Literacy (Comprehension, Word Reading and Writing)
Maths (Number and Numerical Pattern)
Understanding the World (Past and Present, People, Culture and Communities and The Natural World)
Expressive Arts and Design (Creating with Materials and Being Imaginative and Expressive)
We monitor the children’s progression through adult and child daily interactions, observations during whole class, group, individual teaching and play during continuous provision.

Home Learning
At Our Lady and St Paul’s we recognise that parents and carers are the first educators of their children. We highly value the contribution that parents and carers make and we aim to work in partnership to ensure that every child reaches their full potential.
Book bags and reading books need to be in school each day. The Reception children will bring home a library book to share and a book or ditty that reflects the phonics that we are learning. The phonics scheme that we use is Read Write inc.
Your child reads each day in school. Please make every attempt to read each day with your child. Just 10 minutes each day will make such a difference to their progress.

Daily activities to complete with your child
- Daily writing practice –please encourage your child to practice writing their first and second name, encouraging them to use an upper-case letter for their initial and lower-case letters for the other letters.
- Daily reading practice – please continue to engage with daily reading with your child; this could be through singing rhymes, poems and songs also as well as reading stories. It is really beneficial to read aloud to your child each day. This will prepare them to succeed as a reader. Bedtime stories are so valuable to encourage good future reading habits with your child.
- Daily number/counting practice –subitising up to 5 or 10. Sing number songs and rhymes. Using mathematical language such ‘more’ and ‘less’-this could be done when playing or when preparing food together. Go on a number hunt around the home or outdoors-focus on identifying numerals 0-10. Order numerals to 5 and then 10.
At Our Lady and St Paul’s we use the Number sense programme.
Speech and Language
The development of children’s language skills underpins all areas of learning as well as enabling children to make meaningful relationships and communicate their feelings. This is why language and communication is at the heart of what we do in the early years at Our Lady and St Paul’s.

Oral Health
In Foundation Stage, we are keen to promote good oral hygiene. Please share these videos with your child and talk about the importance of brushing your teeth in the morning and at night. You can also discuss how different foods and drinks can be good or bad for your teeth. We have now resumed our tooth brushing programme in School.

PE
PE (Physical Education) in EYFS is on a Monday and a Friday.
PE kits should be brought into school at the start of each term – they will be returned at the end of each half term.
Please ensure ALL items of clothing including shoes, are clearly labelled with your child’s full name.
Partnership with Parents
It is important for parents and early years settings to have a strong and respectful partnership. This sets the scene for children to thrive in the early years.
This includes listening regularly to parents and giving parents clear information about their child’s progress.
The help that parents give their children at home has a very significant impact on their learning.
It is important to encourage all parents to chat, play and read with their children.
